Dan ZieglerProf Dan Ziegler, Head of Neuropathy at German Diabetes Center at Heinrich Heine University, Germany will coordinate the special session about diabetic neuropathy. He will give a strategic presentation about the current concepts in the pathogenesis, diagnosis, and treatment of diabetic neuropathy.

Among the topics which will be discussed by Prof. Dan Ziegler:

  • Role of oxidative stress in the development and progression of diabetic neuropathy
  • Novel methods to assess small nerve fiber pathology (skin biopsy, corneal confocal microscopy)
  • Current evidence for causal treatment (glycemic control, multifactorial risk intervention)
  • Role of pathogenetic treatments under particular consideration of oxidative stress
  • Evidence based management of neuropathic pain
  • Novel biomarkers for diabetic neuropathy focusing on oxidative stress and inflammation
  • Tools for screening and clinical diagnosis of diabetic polyneuropathy

 

Who is Prof Dan Ziegler?

Prof Dan Ziegler is Deputy director, research group leader, and professor of Internal Medicine at Institute for Clinical Diabetology, German Diabetes Center, Leibniz Center for Diabetes Research at Heinrich Heine University. He is also consultant physician, Department of Endocrinology and Diabetology at University Hospital, Heinrich Heine University, Düsseldorf, Germany.
His areas of interest are pathophysiology, pathology, diagnosis, screening, prevention, and treatment of diabetic polyneuropathy, neuropathic pain, cardiovascular autonomic neuropathy, gastrointestinal motility, and erectile dysfunction; design of clinical trials.

He was awarded for the following prices:
- Jühling Prize of the Anna Wunderlich-Ernst Jühling Foundation, Düsseldorf, December 1994
- Ferdinand Bertram Prize of the German Diabetes Association (DDG), Basel, May 1996
- Camillo Golgi Prize of the European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD), Stockholm, Sweden, September 2010
- Research Prize of the Heinz Bürger-Büsing Foundation for the exploration and treatment of diabetes mellitus, Mainz, Germany, February, 2015

He also published more than 300 original articles, reviews, and book chapters.
